After reading the criteria for this award I felt that I had to nominate this individual. A.J. has a disability, cerebral palsy, that doesn't allow him to step onto the field and play. He is wheel chair bound, and doesn't have the ability to walk on his own. However, A.J. is as much of a teammate and player as any other person on our team. For four years A.J. has been to just about every practice, every game, and every team function giving his support to the athletes that can step out on the field. You will not find more heart, passion, pride, or positive leadership in another individual. I've always told others that if I put A.J.'s Heart in every single one of my players then we would be state champs every year.
A great story of A.J. is when our team is lifting weights, he will ask one of the players or coaches to give him an 8 lb dumbbell so that he can lift with them. He does as many exercises as he can with that 8 lb dummbell. I see the determination on his face when he lifts, nothing will stop him from doing accomplishing his goals.
A.J., has been an inspiration to every member of our team. He has shown them that no matter how bad things may get on the football field or in life, there is always a reason to stay positive and not feel sorry for yourself. He shows others to keep working towards your goal no matter what the obstacle is, and he has seen his share of those. A.J., has been a staple of this small community. Everyone knows who he is and knows his passion for athletics. There has been a time I wish I could trade places with him for one game so that he could feel what it's like to tackle someone, catch a pass, run the football, or make a block. Even though he can't, he still lives through his team and does everything in his power to make them successful.
I believe A.J. shows character, courage, commitment, and contribution. He has been a leader and inspiration to the team, coaching staff, and community.
